Clearwater Bay Hong Kong Holes 13-15

Hole 13: This golf club in Hong Kong's tee box offers one of the course's most spectacular ocean views with Chai Wan and Hong Kong Island visible on a clear day. A tee shot of 180 yards is required to clear the ravine, however, that is only part of the challenge as the prevailing wind will push the ball towards the bunker and water on the right side of the hole. The second shot will require a mid to long iron into a green that features a long tongue and multiple undulations - a great Hong Kong golf one is this one at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club!

Hole 14: Take a good look around as this tee box is the highest point of the entire golf course Hong Kong. From here the Ocean Nine and the clubhouse are clearly visible. The wind plays a big factor in the yardage of this hole. Be mindful of a steep ridge that guards the centre of the green making it difficult to get it close on this hole at Clearwater Bay Hong Kong. The green also features fall-offs right and left, go over the green and it is most definitely a lost ball! If you get a chance, try and sneak a look at the pin location of the 16th hole to the right of the tee box!

Hole 15 boasts one of the most demanding tee shots on this Hong Kong Golf Club. The fairway doglegs and narrows to the point where the bunker cuts into the fairway. After negotiating the tee shot one can either choose to attack the green or lay up and try and play down the left side as it is the safe side of the fairway and also offers the best approach angle to the green. This par 5 offers the chance to make a birdie but is definitely a risk reward hole and one of the best 15th holes in all of golf in Hong Kong.

Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club Holes 10-12

Golfinhongkong.com beings the back 9 at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club

Hole 10: The opening hole of this golf club in Hong Kong is the longest par 4 on the course. 468 yards from the tip, it's a beautiful opening dogleg left hole running parallel to the South China Sea. To carry the dogleg from the back tees requires a tee shot of 280 yards, therefore the best approach is to aim for the mound in the middle of the fairway. From there a long precise second shot is required to avoid the fall off on the left and bunker on the right of a deceptively long green at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club.

Hole 11 at this Kong Kong golf club makes club selection and accurate reading of the wind is crucial to negotiate par on this long well-bunkered par 3. The green features a deep false front that guards a front pin location. The narrow portion of the green is the right side where a deep bunker awaits. The back of the green features a slope that helps prevent balls from going through into the trees.

Hole 12 at Clearwater Bay features a bunkered landing area from the tee and a semi island green, this is the most difficult hole on the back nine. The prevailing wind in Hong Kong golf is from the left bringing the right rough and bunker into play off the tee. Unless you are close enough to carry and stop the ball on this semi island green, it is advisable to play the ball to the right and allow the undulations on the approach area to bring the ball towards the middle of the green.

Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club Hong Kong

The final three holes of the backnine at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club in Hong Kong provide any golfer with a real test of their golfing abilities. Here's the hole by hole descriptions continuing on from our series.

Hole 7 at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club Here, depending on the wind, provides the longer hitter a chance to go for the green though for the normal Hong Kong golfer, they will need to position the ball to the right side of the fairway with a long iron or wood that will keep clear of the water left and the bunker. This leaves players with a short iron that has three bunkers guarding the green that slopes from back to front.

Hole 8 at Clearwater Bay is a dogleg left requiring some thought from the tee box. The best line is to aim for the bunker on the hill with a draw. There is a ball out area to the right that will leave a longer club in. The second shot is hard to judge as it plays slightly uphill and toward the horizon which makes it difficult to see. Again, check the flag placement to ensure the right club selection. The green is guarded with a bunker left and right.

For Hole 9 your tee ball needs to be well placed here to avoid the four fairway bunkers that are looking straight at you. A long iron or wood will leave you with a short iron to another big green that has a false front that will stop any ball that is short. Again, club selection is crucial with yet another uphill approach to end the back nine at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club.

Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club Holes 4-6

Part 2 of Golfinhongkong.com's Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club Course Tour.

Hole 4: Another demanding par 3 at Clearwater Bay Golf Hong Kong that requires thought from the tee with club selection. Left side of the green is the bail out area, while any shots right will find the ocean or one of the two bunkers. The three-tier green will influence which club is chosen. One of the better Par 3's in all of Hong Kong Golf

Hole 5: This is an uphill par 5 at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club which, for the longer hitters, will need to stay clear of the fairway bunker on the left side of the fairway, while a water hazard runs all down the right side of the hole. You will be left with a blind second shot: aim for the clubhouse as a guideline, something that your Hong Kong Golf partner will also find difficult. For the third shot you are left with an uphill shot with a bunker short left and two bunkers short right. Make sure you check where the flag is on the green.

Hole 6: The third par 3 of the nine is a strong Hong Kong golf hole that plays uphill and is 200 plus yards. Any shot short will come back down off the false front of the green. An errant shot left or right will be taken by bunkers guarding the green. Flag placement will influence club selection on this great golf hole at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club in Hong Kong

Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club Holes 1-3

Golf In Hong Kong brings you hole by hole descriptions of Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club, a must play for any serious golfer looking to play golf in Hong Kong.

Hole 1:
We hope you have been to the Hong Kong golf driving range before heading to this demanding 230 yards par 3 opening hole at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club, as there is no let up from the word go! This down hill par 3 has a hazard down the right that snakes around the back of the green and two bunkers guarding the left side of the green. Your ideal line of play is to aim at the middle mound at the back of the green.

Hole 2:
The ideal line here for Hong Kong Golfers is the middle left of the fairway, which keeps you away from the three fairway bunkers of the tee. If you happen to catch the drive you may have a chance of getting up with your second shot, but you'll be bringing into play the two fairway bunkers guarding the approach. Your aim for the shot is at the pergola on the distant hill with a long iron. Your third shot leaves you with a downhill shot with three bunkers guarding the front and right side of the green. The shot plays a little short of the yardage with more room left of the green.

Hole 3:
You have now reached one of the most picturesque and demanding holes in Hong Kong right here at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club. With rocks and water looking at you all down the right side, you will have to carry your ball over 180 yards and over two fairway bunkers guarding the right side to safely reach the fairway. The bunker on the left side is only in play when the hole is down wind. Ideal line is the left centre of the fairway. Second club selection is crucial as the wind plays a big part with a bunker short that will take any miss-hit shots and with the ocean surrounding the green.

Proving the adage, "Good things come to those who wait," Callaway Staff Professional Ernie Els got his hands on the new Tour i(s) Golf Ball at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China and reaped immediate rewards. The Big Easy finished second, one shot behind fellow Callaway Staff Pro Phil Mickelson, who used the Tour ix Golf Hong Kong Ball. Els equaled the course record with a final-round 63, finishing the tournament 16-under-par. Callaway Golf balls grabbed the top three spots on the leaderboard, as Callaway Ball Staffer Ryan Moore also used the Tour i(s) on his way to a third place finish.

How excited is Els about the new golf ball? He woke Callaway's PGA Tour Reps in the United States with a 5 a.m. phone call, excited about his performance with the Tour i(s).

"That ball is unbelievable! This is the ball that I have been waiting for," Els yelled into the phone from Shanghai, unfortunately I dont think he played golf in Hong. "Did you see how my short game was and how my iron shots were? I told you when I saw this ball at Akron that we would do something, and I wish I could have pulled off a win for you. I made a hole-in-one on the second day I ever played with it. I can't wait to get going next year. That ball is unbelievable."

Since he first tested a prototype of the Tour i(s) Golf Ball in August at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club, Els has been clamoring to use the new ball in competition. From the get-go, he was excited about how the Tour i(s) would offer control in his short game. The WGC-HSBC Champions event marked the first time that the soon-to-be-released Tour i(s) Golf Ball was put into play, and the initial returns were stellar.

"Today was a wonderful day, I really had a good time," Els said after his 9-under-par final round. "The new Tour i(s) Golf Ball is phenomenal! It would have been unbelievable if I could have won with this ball. I'm looking forward to the future now and I think my equipment is spot-on."
Ernie Els

With the Odyssey White Hot XG #5 Putter and the Tour i(s) ball, Els improved his putting statistics dramatically this week in China. He led the field with 1.546 putts per green in regulation, and was third in the field in putts per round, with an average of just 26.2. The big South African also hit 66 percent of fairways off the tee while averaging 299 yards with the FT-9 Tour Authentic Driver and the Tour i(s) ball. That's 8 yards longer than he averaged all season on the PGA Tour.

Ryan Moore also used the new Tour i(s) ball with fantastic results. He shot 66-69-70-68 en route to his third-place finish. "I liked it," Moore said after the first round. "Really liked it with the wedges and putter. I think it may have gone a little longer with the driver. I'm a big fan." Almost as much he likes playing golf in Hong Kong,

The softest Tour ball Callaway Golf Hong Kong has ever made, the new Tour i(s) was designed to face the new Condition of Competition regarding grooves that golf's ruling bodies have instituted for play on the professional tours in 2010. Its four-piece construction features a Hyper-Urethane cover that produces maximum spin and control around the greens without sacrificing any distance off the tee. Refined HEX Aerodynamics and a second generation Dual Core construction produce a stronger ball flight in all wind conditions. The Tour i(s) will be available at retail in January and features a new product introduction retail price of $42.99.

The Tour i(s) ball is softer than the Tour ix Golf Ball that Phil Mickelson rode to victory in China. Mickelson and fellow Callaway Staff Professional Alvaro Quiros, who finished the HSBC Champions event tied for 8th place, both used the Tour ix to go deep off the tee. Mickelson averaged 300 yards (5th longest in the field), while Quiros dusted the field with an eye-popping average of 310 yards. Quiros' average driving distance was more than eight yards longer than the nearest competitor. Callaway Golf Hong Kong

Also available in January will be the new Tour i(z) Golf Ball, Callaway's longest Tour ball. The Tour i(z) features a second generation Dual Core Construction that delivers even faster ball speeds. Like the Tour i(s), it also features refined HEX Aerodynamics pattern has been improved to add even more distance by reducing drag.

Titleist Pro V1 Hong Kong

Fairhaven, MA (January 11, 2010) - As season openers go, this performance could not have been scripted any better. Trusting the Pro V1 golf ball as sold at Hong Kong Golf Shop, and for the first time, a bag of Titleist equipment, Geoff Ogilvy successfully defended his SBS Championship on the Plantation Course at Kapalua.

Ogilvy posted a one-shot win at the winners-only tournament, rallying from a two-shot deficit with 10 holes to play. He closed with a 6-under par 67 to finish at 22-under 270.

Displaying focus, determination and consistency, Ogilvy fired four consecutive rounds in the 60's for the second year in a row en route to his seventh career PGA Tour title. It marked another great start for the #1 ball in golf and an even better one for Titleist's newest brand ambassador.

Titleist was the golf ball choice of more players in the limited 28-player field with 15, three times the nearest competitor with five. Titleist was also the favorite in the wedge category with 19 in play. Buy Titleist golf clubs in Hong Kong at www.golfshophongkong.com

"Are you making any changes in ball construction to combat the new groove standard instituted by the USGA for Condition of Competition events?"

This has been among the most frequently asked questions by Hong Kong golfers and media alike when discussing the new "groove rule" that commenced on January 1, 2010 on the worldwide professional tours. The Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x are the most played golf balls across every major worldwide professional tour and in amateur events, sold at www.golfshophongkong.com.
Based upon our research with Tour players, club professionals and better amateurs, they will continue to be the most played as players now compete with the new grooves.

The variables contributing to the Hong Kong golf shot are, in order of magnitude: 1) the player; 2) the golf club; 3) the golf ball. Through extensive player and machine testing, we have determined the part of the game the groove changes will affect most is shots from the rough inside 100 yards, where there will be a 30 to 50 percent loss of spin for most players. Spin on iron tee shots and full fairway shots will be virtually unaffected. According to 2009 PGA TOUR player data from ShotLink, less than four percent of all shots during a round are struck from the rough within 100 yards from the green. That translates to about three shots per round on a par 72 golf course.

It doesn't make sense to change the spin characteristics of the golf ball, affecting every shot, to compensate for a groove change affecting only a few shots per round.

Further more, it is impossible to fully compensate for a 30 to 50 percent reduction in spin without dramatically altering every other aspect of ball performance, notably causing a significant distance loss. Rather than change their golf ball, we understand most players will address the issue through increased emphasis on trajectory control for those few shots from the rough by altering their swing technique and/or adjusting wedge specifications (loft, lie, bounce). Play Golf in Hong Kong.

While every player and situation is different, the amount of spin generated is dependent on the player and their technique, the type of shot being hit, the club specifications and the play conditions. In any golf shot, the player is the most influential variable followed by the influence of the Hong Kong golf club, and for this reason, changes in the design and construction of the current Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls as a result of the new groove standard are not necessary.

Frost provides WCGC Hong Kong Golf players with winning vintage

Hong Kong, 02 Feb 2010 -

Golfing icon David Frost is giving the WCGC Hong Kong a taste of success by supplying the tournament with his exclusive range of wines.

The South African great – winner of more than 20 titles worldwide – has combined his golf career with a hugely successful wine producing business in his homeland.

Now his Hong Kong importer, WINE2U.com.hk, has been unveiled as the Official Wine Supplier of the WCGC Hong Kong (www.wcgc-hongkong.com).

“We have wines to suit all occasions but most specifically WINE2U.com.hk recognises the natural ‘partnership’ between your favourite wine and the enjoyment of your favourite sport, be it as a spectator or player,” said Ruth Sellers, of WINE2U.com.hk.

“Thus we are very proud to present exclusively to the World Corporate Golf Challenge Hong Kong the range of David Frost wines, a natural connection between the game of golf, business and fine wines.”

Frost (pictured) grew up on his family’s wine farm near Stellenbosch and it was through earning pocket money picking grapes that he bought his first set of golf clubs. He went on to enjoy a stellar career, collecting 10 US PGA Tour titles, winning the 1994 Hong Kong Open and spending a total of 86 weeks in the official world top 10.

In the summer of 1994, he and his brother Michel bought a 300-acre wine farm near Paarl and began producing the David Frost Signature Series, with each vintage named after a famous golfer.

The WCGC Hong Kong will be held on Friday, 5 March 2010 at Discovery Bay Golf Club in Hong Kong. Twenty teams – comprising four players who each have a maximum handicap of 24 – will take part.

The winning team will earn an all-expenses-paid trip to the WCGC World Final in South Africa from 3-8 May during which they will also be given a guided tour of Frost’s wine estate.

A proportion of proceeds from the WCGC Hong Kong will be donated to Camp Quality, the organisation which provides year-round support for children undergoing treatment for cancer, and their families.
