Beginners Guide to Hong Kong Golf Shops

You enter a Hong Kong golf shop and are overwhelmed with all the irons, woods, putters and wedges that you see along with the golf balls, clothing and other golf accessories. If you are just starting to play golf in Hong Kong, the task of selecting the golf clubs that would work for you could be a bit challenging.

Firstly, you would need to know what a set of clubs is made up of. There are four main types of golf clubs: the Woods, the Irons, the Wedges and the Putter. Today, you may also come across hybrid clubs. A hybrid club is a cross of a wood and an iron. People who are having a hard time hitting their long irons, like a 2 or 3 iron, prefer to use these clubs. You are allowed to have up to 14 clubs and could be in any combination. An example of a good combination for your golf clubs would be one driver, one 4 wood, 3 through 9 iron, a lob wedge, a gap wedge, a sand wedge, a pitching wedge and one putter. However, the combination would entirely be up to you or the golfer as different combinations work for different people. Out staff at Hong Kong golf shop can help you

And then need to know your available options as you buy your golf clubs. You can either buy used or new. Although you would definitely save more if you choose to buy used golf clubs, you may encounter some issues like cracked shafts, worn grips and other problems that a new set would surely not have. If you are buying your first set, it usually makes more sense to buy new ones.

After deciding on buying a new or old set at your Hong Kong golf shop, you now have to decide if you will be getting a complete set or will just buy individual clubs by your own to make one set. Putting together your own set would be a bit more expensive compared to just buying a set of clubs that is already complete. Purchasing a complete set also saves you the hassle and the time in making decisions.

Presuming you are a beginner golfer to Hong Kong, it is recommended to buy the complete starter set, which includes one driver, a 3 wood, a 5 wood, the 3 through 9 irons, one pitching wedge and your putter. This could also include one sand wedge and a bag for your golf clubs. Although this set only has 11 or 12 clubs, as your game progresses, you could decide for yourself on which club to add to your set. You could eventually add a 2 iron, another wedge or a hybrid club.

Also Please keep in mind that getting expensive golf clubs will not improve your game or help you play better. You should not spend $300 on just one driver if you could spend a lot less to get everything you need in one package. Getting a complete set would be the best option to save you money that would later on need for replacing lost golf balls. Hong Kong Golf Shop - Buying Golf Clubs in Hong Kong

To play the game of golf in Hong Kong, it is essential that one has the proper golf equipment. Hong Kong Golf equipment can be a costly investment, as there are so many gimmicks and gadgets being sold to improve one's game. However, for the weekend duffer, nothing more is needed than the essentials: golf clubs, a bag to carry the clubs in and golf balls.

According to United States Golf Association rules, a golfer should carry no more than fourteen clubs in the bag. The essential clubs needed are a driver, fairway woods, irons, wedges and a putter. The golfer can mix and match the number of particular clubs to suit his game as long as he does not exceed fourteen clubs. Golf is not an inexpensive game, as the average golfer will normally spend between $500 and $1,000 to purchase a complete set of clubs.

Hong Kong Golf bags are an essential part of golf equipment because it would be impractical, if not impossible, to haul fourteen clubs and golf balls around a golf course. Bags can be made of fine leather but most golfers usually use some sort of lightweight nylon bag. It is advised that a golfer choose his bag based on how he will primarily be getting around the course. If he will primarily be riding on a golf cart, he may want to choose a larger bag that will accommodate more accessories, balls, towels, etc. If he plans on walking, then a light bag with a comfortable shoulder strap is recommended. Many of the light, nylon bags are being made with retractable legs that will allow the walking golfer to prop up his bag while on the course.

Hong Kong Golf balls
are usually sold in boxes of three, called sleeves. Many times it is most economical to purchase packages that include five or six sleeves. The two main balls sold are balata and two-piece balls. Balata balls are made with a hard rubber core, wound with rubber bands, and covered with balata (a soft, plastic cover). The two-piece ball is normally a large, hard rubber core, surrounded by a surlyn cover. Surlyn is a hard plastic that is more resistant to nicks and cuts. The balata is softer, but most advanced golfers feel they can shape the flight of the ball easier than with a two-piece ball.

There are other pieces of Hong Kong golf equipment that the beginning golfer may wish to obtain. The first is a pair of golf shoes. Golf shoes range in variety from wingtip, to tennis shoes, to sandals. Most shoes made today come with soft rubber spikes, to assist the golfer in setting his feet into the ground. Another recommended piece of equipment would be a golf glove. After a day of swinging a club around 80 times, blisters can form on the grip hand if not protected by a glove. Other pieces of golf equipment that should be considered are golf tees, ball markers, a club brush and an umbrella, for rainy days.

All to play for Golfing in Hong Kong

All to play for in Hong Kong

(UKPA) – Nov 11, 2009

Race to Dubai contenders Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy headline the field at the Hong Kong Golf Open but smaller battles will also unfold in Fanling this week.

McIlroy sits 52,321 euros adrift of money-list leader Westwood heading into the penultimate event of the season, with both in good form following a string of top-10 finishes. New world number four Westwood, 36, is keen to hang onto pole position ahead of next week's crucial season-ending Dubai World Championship with a win on his first visit to Hong Kong Golf Club.

The 2000 Order of Merit winner said: "I have watched it on TV over the years. It is very tight and tree-lined. Same as most other courses we play in that if you hit it straight, get it in position and hole a few putts, you generally do well."

He added: "There is big prize money next week but it will certainly help to win here this week. I am not thinking about the money list this week but thinking more about the Hong Kong Open as it is a very old and prestigious tournament and one I have never won."

McIlroy, 20, was the runner-up last year after just losing out in a thrilling play-off and is keen to go one better to remain in the hunt for a maiden money-list title in only his second full season.

"These two weeks are going to be very good. Hong Kong I love coming to. It's my fifth year coming here - twice as an amateur and then this is my third Hong Kong Open," said the world number 17.

"I love the city and golf course. It is one of my favourite weeks of the year. Winning this event will take care of catching Lee so that's what I am focusing on."

Oliver Wilson, Simon Dyson, Singapore Open champion Ian Poulter, Soren Kjeldsen and Francesco Molinari are all currently ranked inside the top 15 in the Race to Dubai and looking to improve their positions this week.

The likes of Bradley Dredge, Jamie Donaldson and Stephen Dodd are hoping to hang onto qualifying spots, while Darren Clarke and Castello Masters champion Michael Jonzon are looking to break into the top 60 to ensure a place at the lucrative season-ending showpiece.

Race to Dubai competition to heat up in Hong Kong

By Min Lee, Associated Press Writer
HONG KONG GOLF — The European Tour's top earners are gathering in Hong Kong this week to make a final push for the lucrative season-ending tournament in Dubai.

Race to Dubai leaders Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy and No. 10 Ian Poulter are among the star attractions at $2.5 million UBS Hong Kong Open, starting Thursday at the par-70, 6,702-yard course at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling.

Paul Casey, who was sitting fifth in the Race to Dubai, was scheduled to play in Hong Kong but pulled out with a recurring rib injury.

The Hong Kong golf tournament, co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, has attracted one of its strongest fields since it was first staged in 1959 -- in part thanks to its timing as the final pre-Dubai tournament and proximity to the HSBC Champions in Shanghai last week.

The top 60 earners on the European Tour after Hong Kong will play in Dubai on Nov. 19 to Nov. 22 for a $7.5 million bonus pool.

Westwood told reporters Tuesday he hopes to cushion his lead in the European Tour prize money list when he makes his debut at the Hong Kong tournament.

"The people in Dubai will be delighted it is fairly open and obviously I am in the best position of anybody and pleased to be in that position ... There is big prize money next week, but it will certainly help to win here this week," the Englishman said.

Northern Ireland's McIlroy said he's looking forward to closing the gap between him and Westwood at one of his favorite stops on the calendar.

"There is not much between us now, so any ground I can gain this week will be good to take into Dubai," McIlroy said. "But winning will take care of that, so that is my main focus."

The field in Hong Kong golf also includes former British Open champions Mark O'Meara and Ben Curtis, Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, PGA Championship winner Yang Yong-eun of South Korea -- the first Asian major winner -- as well as two-time Hong Kong champion Miguel Angel Jimenez and defending champion Lin Wen-tang of Taiwan.

Sweden's Robert Karlsson, who won the last Order of Merit title on the European Tour, is still on the comeback after being forced out of the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black because of an eye infection which left him with no depth perception in his left eye.

McIlroy and Westwood are coming off strong showings at the HSBC Champions.

McIlroy finished fourth -- ahead of Tiger Woods -- and Westwood tied for eighth. McIlroy is also aiming to go one step further than he did here last year, when he narrowly lost a playoff against Lin.

Other stars in the Hong Kong field are five-time PGA winner Rory Sabbatini, India's Jeev Milkha Singh and Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Thongchai Jaidee from Thailand.

Hong Kong Golf Open Bomber

Pucay bombs out of Hong Kong Open golf

Article posted November 15, 2009 - 09:25 AM
FANLING, Hong Kong — A day after contending for the title, Filipino Mars Pucay was nowhere near the leader as he suffered the worse score in three days heading into the final round of the $2.5-million UBS Hong Kong Open at the Hong Kong Golf Club.

Pucay’s 68 and 67 catapulted him to within four atop the board but a three-over-par 73 washed out all hopes of breaking through the win column. His 208 aggregate was way off the 16-under-par 194 of France’s Gregory Bourdy.

Leading third round scores
194 – Gregory Bourdy (FRA) 64-67-63
196 – Robert-Jan Derksen (NED) 63-68-65
199 – Rory Mcilroy (NIR) 66-68-65
200 – Miguel Angel Jimenez (ESP) 68-69-63
Francesco Molinari (ITA) 66-68-66
Peter Lawrie (IRL) 66-68-66
Lin Wen-tang (TPE) 64-69-67
208 – Juvic Pagunsan (67-70-71)
Mars Pucay (68-67-73)

Consider the facts: Pucay got a little adventurous at the par-three eighth hole where he missed the green completely en-route to a double bogey. Add to that, four bogeys on Nos. 6, 9, 14 and 17 as against three birdies on Nos. 7, 12 and 16.

His round was a far cry from the second day when he shot flawless three birdies and no bogey.

“It was probably the breaks of the game. Maybe I was too eager to score heavily today. Sayang," Pucay said to GMANews.TV.

Like his countryman, Juvic Pagunsan also got off-tracked with a one-over-par 71 in the event which is Hong Kong’s oldest professional sporting event, having started in 1959. He was under-par for two days but now ties Pucay at 50th with 208.

Pagunsan, whose year is also devoid of any crown so far, began worst with three straight bogeys. Only his string of birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 saved him from sliding further in the standing.

“I was not in my element. There was nothing spectacular for me today except for those two birdies towards the end of the round," said Pagunsan, a former Asian Tour rookie of the year.

On Friday, Filipinos Angelo Que, Artemio Murakami and Antonio Lascuna were all cut.

Frenchman ahead
Gourdy, the two-time European Tour winner, was just superb on Saturday when he submitted the day’s lowest score of seven-under-par 63 to post a two-stroke lead.

His three-day total 194 was two better than Netherlands’ Robert-Jan Derksen, who carded a five-under-par 65 to lie at second place with 196.

Bourdy ended the day in the same position from where he started. A place at the top was never in doubt after the Frenchman returned with an unblemished card that was highlighted by seven birdies.

“It was a fantastic round with seven birdies and no bogeys. I feel good on this course. I feel good in Hong Kong and I am enjoying the week. I’ll try and keep the putter warm for tomorrow as it was unbelievable today," said Bourdy.

Northern Island’s Rory McIlroy was in third with 199 after a five-under 65 and lurked behind Bourdy and Derksen while defending champion Ling Wen-tang of China shared fourth with a 200 total. – Adrian Flores, GMANews.TV

Tiger Woods has more girl trouble.

A Los Angeles cocktail waitress named Jaimee Grubbs claims she and the world's top golfer carried on a torrid 31-month affair - and says she has photos and hundreds of "racy" text messages to prove it.

"Send me something very naughty," Woods reportedly wrote in a text message that Grubbs turned over to Us Weekly. "Go to the bathroom and take [a picture]."

"I will wear you out," Woods reportedly wrote to Grubbs in another.

Grubbs, who says she was 21 when she first hooked up with Woods in April 2007, insists their relationship was more than just sex.

"He told me just last month, 'Quietly and secretly we will always be together,'" Grubbs said.

Woods' reps had nothing to say about Grubbs when contacted by the Daily News. The golfer remained holed up in his Orlando mansion with his wife, model Elin Nordegren.

Although Woods, 33, escaped criminal charges for crashing his Cadillac Escalade outside his home on Friday, his reputation as a good guy was badly dented by tabloid reports he was having an affair with New York party girl Rachel Uchitel, 34.

She categorically denied a fling - but the hits have kept coming.

Citing unnamed sources, Us reported that Woods had other "dalliances" with a "Las Vegas marketing professional at the MGM grand hotel," with a blond and a brunette at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in upstate New York and regularly hits on girls at an Orlando bar.

Grubbs, 24, said Woods told her to keep quiet before the National Enquirer broke the story about Uchitel.

"Hey, it's Tiger," Woods reportedly said in a Nov. 24 voice mail. "I need you to do me a huge favor."

Woods then explained that his wife "went through my phone and may be calling you," the magazine reported. "So if you can, please take your name off that."

Until now, Grubbs was best known as the girlfriend of Shawn (Loud Mouth Tool) Southern, one of the oafish contestants on VH1's reality series, "Tool Academy."

A man at the home of Grubbs' mother's house in a San Diego suburb said Southern was out of the picture.

Grubbs says her romance with Woods began when the duffer tapped her on the shoulder and said, "You don't look like you're having any fun."

Grubbs said she partied with Woods and his posse and had sex with the golf champ for the first time a few days later in San Diego.

"Afterward, he was like, 'You should probably go,'" she said, explaining that Woods prefers to sleep alone.

Grubbs said they had sex about 20 times and that Woods frequently complained that "his life is overwhelming."

While Woods is one of the world's richest athletes, he often lamented that "he wasn't as financially stable as he wanted to be," she said.

A friend and castmember of Southern's on "Tool Academy," Ryan Matsunga, said Woods used to call Grubbs on the set, driving Southern bonkers.

"Shawn really cared about Jaimee, and Tiger was calling her when they were dating. Not cool," Matsunga said. "When you're an alpha male, that makes you want to put your fist through a wall."

Grubbs also apologized to Woods' wife.

"I loved how we got along," she told Us. "But I knew in the back of my mind there could never be just us. There would always be the wife, or somebody else."
